Scarecrows in the Park

Scarecrows in the Park

Altering the lyrics slightly of a popular song, the City of Lucas Parks Board wants to know, do you want to build a scarecrow? Their fourth annual scarecrow contest is free to enter and open to the community (not only Lucas residents). Winners will receive cash prizes.

The scarecrow contest has been held three years. Parks board member, Ken Patterson asked for board members to suggest new ideas to revitalize the contest. Debra Guillemaud, newly elected to the Parks Board agreed to help. Guillemaud has lived in Lucas for 18 years. She became a board member because, “One of my hobbies is gardening. I thought I could use my enthusiasm to help the parks.”

This year the scarecrows will be displayed at Lucas Community Park (next to City Hall). This is different from years past where the scarecrows were displayed at homes. Guillemaud said, “This is another social opportunity for Lucas. This is a small town way to encourage family fun in a community environment.”

Scarecrows will be on display at the park October 20 – November 3. This will be a great time to enjoy a fall stroll around the paths, play on the playground, relax in the pavilion and see all the scarecrows.  Winners will be announced at the Fall Sweep Cleanup/Arbor Day Event on November 3. (Winners do not need to be present to win.)

Scarecrows should be registered and delivered October 15 – 19. Each contestant will be assigned a plot which will have a pole in which the scarecrow is attached. Contestants can decorate the area around the scarecrow if desired, but that is not mandatory. The scarecrows will be in the elements for 16 days, plan accordingly for weather. For judging purposes, photos of the scarecrows will be taken when they are originally displayed in case weather damage does occur.

Equal weight will be given to effort and creativity during the judging process. Members of the parks board will be the judges. City of Lucas staff and board members are encouraged to create a scarecrow, but they are ineligible to win the contest. There will be three winners. Cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 will be awarded.
