Willow Springs 7th Grade Boys Win First Home Games
The energy was high at Willow Springs as the 7th boys basketball teams prepared to play their first basketball game of their career on their home court. The Leopards made their opening games a night to remember as all three teams (A, B and C) defeated the Buccaneers from Burnett Junior High.
The B-team played first and quickly took the lead in the first period 8-1 led by hot shooting from Brendan Cooper who scored six points in the period. The Leopards increased their lead in the second period to 16- 6 with William Fry netting four points and Hunter Hayward and John Woody each contributing a basket. WSMS put the game out of reach in the third period holding the Buccaneers scoreless while scoring 12 points, including four points each from Kaiden Rice and Luke Winchester. Colin Milliken scored all seven of his points in the final period as the Leopards cruised to a 37-11 win.
The most competitive game of the night took place when the A-team took the court against Burrnett. The Buccaneers quickly took the lead early in the first period but Willow Springs answered with five points from Colgin Pettit and three points from Ridge Barker to regain the lead 8-7 after the first period. Joshua Gapp made a basket in a low scoring second period as the teams headed to halftime with WSMS up 13-11. The Leopards extended their lead to 19-15 in the third period with Avery Fuller and Aarren Marshall contributing points. Burnett made a furious comeback attempt in the final period bringing the score to within one point before WSMS surged ahead for good with two minutes remaining. Six different Leopards scored in the final period but the turning point was the play at the rim by Ridge Barker and Colston Adamson and the shooting of Grant Harlan which allowed Willow Springs to pull away. Adamson and Harlan each scored four points in the final period as the Leopards won 34-27.
The C-team made sure the sweep was complete as they defeated the Buccaneers 27-12 in the final game of the night. The Leopards took the lead in the first with Luke Wright scoring four of his team high nine points in the period. WSMS took a 15-7 lead into halftime with Anup Ghumman and Ben Muirhead contributing to the scoring. Nicholas Perez netted four points in the third and Noah Edwards added a basket as WSMS increased their lead to 23-7 headed into the final period. Reese Ogden converted a free throw and Cameron Batastini scored a basket in the final period leading to the final score of 27-12 Willow Springs.
