Varsity Softball Has Success In Early Season Tournament
Lovejoy participated in the Tournament of Champions at Oran Good Park which consisted of 32 teams from the DFW metro area and a few traveling from outside the area.
In game one the Lady Leopards faced off against the Mustangs from Andrews HS. Leadoff hitter Leah Taylor (sophomore) reached base on a single in the first and proceeded to steal second and third base. A fielders choice by junior Celeste Soliz put Lovejoy up 1-0 in the first. The game remained 1-0 heading into the third inning after both teams failed to score in the second. The Leopards offense exploded in the top of the third with Leah Taylor notching her second hit to get the rally started followed by a bunt single from Sophomore Mackenzie Mitchell to put runners on the corners. Senior Alyssa DiFiore doubled to score Taylor and freshman Holly Massey smashed an opposite field hit for and inside the park home run giving Lovejoy a 5-0 lead. With the 55 min drop dead rule in effect the game ended in the bottom of the third with a Lovejoy 5-0 win. Freshman Sydney Provence pitched two complete innings and earned her first career win in the shutout.
The Leopards struggled in the second game of the tournament falling to Decatur 7-2 but rebounded on day two winning both games against 6A schools. In the morning game Lovejoy overwhelmed Euless Trinity scoring 11 runs in the third to take a 12-2 win. The bats stayed hot in the second game as the Leopards scored 10 in the first in route to a 15-5 win over Garland HS. With a 3-1 record Lovejoy earned a spot in the gold bracket of the tournament but weather forced the remainder of the tournament to be cancelled.
