Chili Cook Off Fundraiser Returns to Founders Day

Chili Cook Off Fundraiser Returns to Founders Day

The City of Lucas scheduled its annual Founders Day celebration for Saturday, April 14 from 12 to 4 p.m. The event will be held at Lucas Community Park located at 665 Country Club Rd. and will feature the Collin County 4-H Chili Cook-Off. In addition to the chili cook-off tent, booths throughout the park will include service organizations, non-profits, churches, scouts and schools, along with homemade arts and crafts. The day will be packed with games and activities, live music, stick horse rodeo, bounce houses, a parade and much more. Each year, Founders Day provides complimentary food, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, as a way to give back to the community. The City of Lucas also hopes to help educate attendees on the importance of sustainable landscaping, water conservation and beautification.

As family and friends prepare for the big day, this year’s Collin County 4-H Chili Cook-Off fundraiser promises to be bigger and better than ever before. There is no fee to enter the contest. Those participating are asked to bring a 10x10 pop-up tent, any tables and chairs needed, along with at least four gallons of (potentially) award-winning chili. Electricity, soufflé cups and tasting spoons will all be provided. While admission to the chili cook-off tent is free, donations are welcome at the entrance. After receiving a wristband, guests will have the option to taste 2 oz. portions of chili from each booth.

Contestants will compete for first, second and third place prizes in four categories. A trophy will also be awarded for the best decorated booth and the people’s choice award. Chili cook-off categories include Texas chili (no beans), hot to trot (spicy), faux chili (vegetarian) and way out and wild (i.e. rabbit, lamb, buffalo). Prizes will be awarded during the event after a panel of local celebrity judges and chili experts choose the winners.

Local 4-H leader and chili cook-off organizer, Bill Esposito, explained, “The chili cook-off is one of the big fundraisers for Collin County 4-H. It helps the kids with scholarships and leadership events. We’ve been doing this for about ten years now. The last five years we’ve partnered with the City of Lucas. We are always looking for ways to get families, organizations and local businesses involved. It is great family fun and also a way for organizations to get their message to the public, and the same for local businesses that support us.”

Silent auction items, donated by local businesses, will be on display for bidding and can be brought to the chili cook-off tent on the day of the event. Judging begins at 12:30 p.m. and awards will be presented at 3 p.m. All proceeds from the Collin County 4-H Chili Cook-Off will benefit local 4-H organizations. For registration, email Bill Esposito at billespo1@gmail.com.
