Boys JV and Varsity Soccer Teams Start District Play With Wins Over Highland Park
The JV Leopards opened district play with an impressive 3-0 win over the Scots from Highland Park on a chilly night at Lovejoy High School. JV head coach Ian Keeble credited the "speed of play" as the key to "catching them off guard and getting break aways" that led to the goals. The first goal of the game was scored by sophomore Tyler Loop followed up with a goal by freshman Michael Myers to put Lovejoy up 2-0 at halftime. Tyler Loop found the net again in the second half and freshmen goalie Sammy Merrick registered a shutout for the Leopards in the win.
The varsity team was pushed and tested by the Scots in a close game that came down to the final few minutes of play. Lovejoy found the net first after a long throw in by senior Grant Lange got loose in the box and junior Caleb Toomey made the most of it putting the Leopards up 1-0. Highland Park answered with a goal of their own twelve minutes later and the teams went to halftime tied 1-1. Each team had chances in the second half but neither were able to net a goal for the deciding win until the last five minutes. Coach Keeble noted the Scots "were playing a lot of long balls leaving only counter attacks" for the Leopards in the second half. One of those counter attacks, led by Caleb Toomey, broke through and junior Benji Merrick scored the game winner on the assist from Toomey with 4:36 remaining in the game leading to a 2-1 win for Lovejoy.
