WSMS 7th Grade Girls Remain Undefeated With Win
The Willow Springs 7th grade girls took on Rockwall Utley on a windy afternoon that saw gusts well over 35mph and forced both teams to adjust to the conditions. Willow Springs started with the wind at their back and struggled the first part of the half find the touch necessary in the extreme wind. That all changed 22 minutes into the game when Aubrey Goff placed a shot over the goalkeeper to put Leopards up 1-0 over the Wolves. Jenna Hengemuhle scored the second goal with 3 minutes remaining in the half to increase the lead to 2-0 over Utley. With one minute remaining in the half Paige Young scored the eventual game winner placing an amazing 45 yard free kick shot over the goalie for a 3-0 lead.
Facing the wind in the second half factored into the formation the Leopards used with Coach Courtney Todd stating the switch to a new formation allowed the team to play better defense against the wind. The strategy paid off with the Leopards limiting Utley's scoring chances in the half. The Wolves were able to score early in the first half but Willow Springs answered with a goal of their own by Emma Smith to make the score 4-2. Utley scored a goal as the clock hit zero leading to a final score of 4-2 Willow Springs. Coach Todd said she was "super impressed with the team given the girls have only been playing together for two weeks" and are now 2-0.
