Big Hit Elusive for JV Red in Loss to Poteet
The JV Red offense was able to put pressure on the Pirates from Mesquite Poteet throughout the game but were unable to put together the big inning needed to take control of the game. Lovejoy stated the first with Austin Marshall and Hunter Smith both reaching base on singles but neither scored in the inning keeping the score 0-0.
Poteet broke the tie in the second scoring one run to take the lead 1-0. Starting pitcher Garrett Larson kept the game close only giving up the one run through four innings with the help of strong defense in the field. Lovejoy's best opportunity to break the game open came in the bottom of the fourth. Koen Nunn led off the inning with deep fly near the right field line that was misplayed allowing him to reach on an error. Tristan Foster reached base on a fielders choice setting up the Leopards with runners at first and second with no outs. Lovejoy was able to scratch across two runs in the inning including an RBI from Cade Hill on a fielder's choice but the clutch hit never came in the inning. The Leopards took the 2-1 lead into the top of the fifth where the Pirates put together a rally scoring four runs and reclaiming the lead 5-2. Hunter Smith led off the bottom of the fifth for Lovejoy with a double and Dylan Collins followed with an RBI single to bring the Leopards within two. Poteet pitching rose to the challenge and recorded the final outs ending the game 5-3 Pirates.
