Last Minute Goal Sends Lovejoy to Regional Quarterfinals
The back to back 15-5A district champion Lovejoy soccer team matched up against Sulphur Springs in the bi-district playoff game on March 30th at Wylie HS. The Leopards broke open the scoring in the 27th minute when Caleb Toomey netted a cross from Gavin George to take a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats answered quickly with a goal 30 seconds later to tie up the game 1-1. The score remained tied into the second half with both teams putting together quality scoring opportunities. With less than three minutes remaining Caleb Toomey gathered a loose ball and made a run down the right side burying the ball in the net for the game winner.
In the Area Round game the Leopards battled Lake Dallas at McKinney HS on March 3rd. The Falcons grabbed the early lead in the 6th minute with a header. Lovejoy answered in the 22nd minute when Benji Merrick slipped passed the charging goalie to tie the score 1-1. Lake Dallas went ahead again in the 57th minute and looked to close out the game. Once again the Leopards answered late in the game when Tyler Loop drilled a shot from 25 yards out to tie the game 2-2 with less than a minute remaining. Lovejoy took their first lead of the game in the second overtime when Grant Lange headed in a cross from Kyle Fisher for the game winner giving Lovejoy the Area Championship.
