Meet Missi the Mississippi Kite
Every month, Blackland Prarie Raptor Center (BPRC) has one of its education ambassadors as its Bird of the Month. This month it is Missi the Mississippi Kite. This is a common raptor in the summer that most people don’t know we have. It is a beautiful silver and gray bird that loves insects. It nests in the tops of trees and is one of the few raptors that can be found in groups. Missi was brought to BPRC as a human-imprinted orphan in 2017. Birds imprint when they see whatever is taking care of them and they associate with them. In this case, it was humans and this is permanent. Missi could not survive in the wild because of this and will be with BPRC the rest of her life.
If you would like to meet Missi, and the other education birds of BPRC, come to the monthly First Saturday when we are open to the public. We do raptor programs, have nature hikes in Blackland Prairie and have kids’ activities. You can adopt Missi to help with her care! For more information go to: http://www.bpraptorcenter.org/adopt-a-raptor-sponsorship-program/. BPRC is located at 1625 Brockdale Park Rd, Allen 75002. Hope to see you soon.
