Leopard Volleyball Camps Set Up Players For Success
Willow Springs Middle School gym was full of volleyball players on June 4th-7th as Lovejoy held their annual camps for kids in grades Kindergarten-9th. The camps, lead by Lovejoy volleyball head coach Jason Nicholson, are a chance for kids to develop foundational skills in the sport while also having fun and developing a love for the game. Coach Nicholson noted volleyball "is such a complicated sport for the younger kids and requires a unique skill set but the key is for them to have fun."
The camp included around 100 kids in the K-6th age level, 60 kids in grades 6th-7th and about 30 in the 9th grade camp. Players from the current Lovejoy volleyball teams assisted in the skills and activities and the younger players obviously enjoyed the opportunity to learn from the older players. "Those little guys look up to our girls and it is fun to watch them idolize the players, having them here to help out is fantastic." stated Coach Nicholson. When asked about the advice he would give to parents about their athlete Nicholson said "all the girls should play in multiple sports, some of them are specializing too soon. Find opportunities for them to participate in sports year round."
The Lovejoy team has built on their previous success under Coach Nicholson's leadership the last four years including a 5A state championship in 2014, state runner-up in 2015 and deep playoff runs the last two seasons. The Leopards will look to continue that success in the 2018-2019 season which officially starts August 1st with tryouts.
