Fairview Dermatology Prioritizes Patient Education
Fairview resident, Helen Kim-James, MD FAAD Board Certified Dermatologist, opened
Fairview Dermatology (331 Town Place - located in Fairview Town Center) on May 17, of this
year. Regarding why she chose this location, she said, “I wanted my practice to be in the
community in which I live.”
While in high school, Dr. Kim-James realized she wanted to become a doctor. She chose the
field of dermatology because she had experienced skin rashes herself and found skin to be
fascinating. An example of the attraction of dermatology she said is that a dermatologist can look
at a person’s nails and know if something is going on in their body. She enjoys the variety that
dermatology provides. She treats people of all ages who have an assortment of skin-care needs
such as acne, skin cancer screening, excision of skin cancer, hair loss, eczema and much more.
At Fairview Dermatology, they also provide a wide array of cosmetic dermatology services.
When patients refer their loved ones to Fairview Dermatology, Dr. Kim-James knows she has
exceeded her patients’ expectations.
She is a firm believer in patient education. She said there are some conditions that cannot be
cured, but they can be treated and maintained. Dr. Kim-James will work with patients to
formulate treatment plans. She emphasizes the priority she places on involving the patient and
answering their questions. She said patients have expressed gratitude over the amount of time
she spends with them. A success story Dr. Kim-James shares involves a patient suffering from a
chronic case of eczema. The patient was applying creams prescribed by a previous dermatologist
and not finding relief. After Dr. Kim-James implemented allergy testing, she found the patient
had an allergic reaction to the prescribed eczema treatment which was one of the reasons the
patient wasn’t improving.
With some patients who have acne problems, Dr. Kim-James will go through what makeup the
patient is wearing and discuss which products might block pores. At Fairview Dermatology, they
have a makeup line they recommend. They also have a line of recommended sun protection
products available for purchase.
The top four reasons patients visit Fairview Dermatology are preventative skin examinations,
acne, rashes and cosmetic concerns. She said that the biggest challenge these days is navigating a treatment plan that stays within the allowances of insurance. She said, “This is becoming a more
concerning problem not unique to dermatology.”
Dr. Kim-James describes the staff at Fairview Dermatology as fun and energetic. She said,
“They are very passionate people who love what they do. They enjoy getting to know each
Dr. Kim-James has lived in Fairview for four years and has three children who attend Lovejoy
