Boyd said she enjoys the relationships she has built while working on this committee. Serpas agreed with Boyd’s reason and added that she finds joy notifying the winners they are the recipients. They enjoy getting to know the recipients, if they don’t already know them, and learning the story behind the yard.

Yards are judged on neatness, landscaping and color as well as the total exterior experience of their property. Judges are looking for healthy and debris free lawns, landscape and flower beds that exemplify beautification efforts with no artificial plants or flowers, clean walkways and driveways, landscaping that includes use of texture and color, is inviting and creative and has a balanced design.

Once a homeowner has won Yard of the Month, they are ineligible to win again until the next year.

Heritage Ranch is divided into three sections. Yards are selected by section leaders. Section leaders are Carol Moore, Peggy Jobe, Naomi Catlin, Joyce Darling, Becky Watts and Michelle Jones. The volunteers drive through the designated sections and pick the yards they find to be most impressive. It is recommended that 10 yards are nominated per section. The nominations are sent to Dianne Mathis with Puckett’s Nursery. Mathis selects the winner. The winner is notified, the sign is placed in their yard and Boyd photographs the winner and their yard. Mathis provides an article describing why she chose the yard as the winner.

Boyd and Serpas said that the residents are ecstatic and surprised when they are informed that they are the winners. Winners receive the yard of the month sign placed in their yard for a month, a $25 gift certificate to Puckett’s Nursery and recognition in the neighborhood publication, Ranch Reporter.

Feedback from the community has been very positive. They are happy to see the program return. All Heritage Ranch residents are welcome to nominate a yard for consideration. Send an email to Debbie Serpas at dserpas972@yahoo.com with the address (no name) of the yard (no backyards) you would like to be considered.

In December, there will be a Christmas lights contest.
