Local Firefighter’s Home Destroyed by Fire
It could not have been a more tragically ironic twist on an all-too-common holiday season theme: Local firefighter’s home is destroyed by fire while he and his Allen team were battling another home fire the day after Christmas.
Jeremy West, a four-year veteran of the Allen Fire Department, who resides with his wife and children in Celina, was finishing a fire call in Allen. West dropped what he was doing and dashed home to find three different fire departments battling a blaze at his home. It was declared a total loss. The loss, he estimates, will exceed $300,000.
Upon learning of West’s loss, his colleagues at the Allen Fire Department immediately responded with all sorts of support and assistance. “Perhaps, most critical is the GoFundMe Page”, says Jeremy Painkin, President of the Allen Firefighters Association - Local 3453. “A goal of $150,000 intended to help the West’s through this awful situation has been established. So far, we have received 354 donations totaling $34,349 against that goal. That is about 22 percent of where we need to go. 100% of the funds raised will be presented directly to the West family.”
Painkin explained, “Because firefighters serve those in need so selflessly, and so regularly, it is very difficult for a firefighter to ask for help. It’s just not in our nature to ask, even when we really need help. The West family really needs our help now.”

When asked how he might put this terrible tragedy into proper perspective, West replied, “I am so thankful to have my family. Our material possessions can be replaced, that’s not the important thing. For me, it’s only about having my family safe.” That is a holiday theme that will
