Varsity Boys Lock Down Number Two Seed In District
On Friday, February 8, the Lovejoy Varsity Boys Basketball team came out with a well-earned win against the Wylie East Raiders 80-46. Before the game, Leopards and fans celebrated their seven seniors: Jacob Blasko, Drew Doig, Trevor Hawley, Johnny Lawrence, Luke Ledebur, Kyle Olson, and Joe Vastano. Head Coach Kyle Herrema stated,”Each senior group is unique. They have different personalities and different interests and this one is just a fun group to hang out with. What is truly enjoyable about this group is that they know how to have fun but know when it’s time to work.”
Starting off the first quarter strong, the Leopards took care of business leading 13-15. Carsen Holden put down three 3-point shots and scored the majority of the points for the Leopards in the second quarter along with Kolby McSpadden who successfully shot four free throw shots and a 3-point shot. The Leopards made sure to keep up the energy up heading into the third quarter of the game with over a 20 point lead making sure to hold Wylie East. During the second half, the Leopards shot eight 3-point shots provided by Kolby McSpadden, Drew Doig, Joe Vastano, and Jacob Blasko. This put the team at 13 3-point shots on the night. Kolby McSpadden led the team in scoring with 17 points with Carsen Holden was not far behind with 13 points.
The Varsity Boys are now the number two seed in their district and will head into playoffs after their last district game against Denison. “We obviously would like to start the playoffs on a win streak and build some momentum going into the playoffs,”Kyle Herrema stated.“We want this to be a game where we can start working on some of the finer details of the game.”
