Girls Soccer Pick Up Two Wins in First Home Games
On Feb. 12, Lovejoy High School girls soccer pulled out two wins against Denison in their first district game of the season. “I thought the girls did a great job controlling the game in our first home game together,” Head Coach Ian Keeble stated. “What I was most happy with is that the girl's still wanted more offensively after the game. Defensively, the girls did an excellent job keeping the clean sheet.”
The JV started off the winning night 3-0 against Denison. The Leopards’ first goal was scored by Lia Hopkinson after a corner kick and a fight to get the ball in the back of the net, and the second goal was scored by Gia George after picking up a loose ball. With an assist by Lia Hopkinson, Fabiana Rey scored the final goal of the game. “This was the girl's eighth clean sheet of their season,” Coach Keeble stated.
Varsity picked up another win of the night as well against Denison 4-0. Jessie Maashio scored a goal early in the game with an assist by Reagan Matacale after a combination play. During the first half, the Leopards had three shots on the opponent’s goal as well as two corner kicks. During halftime, Coach Ian Keeble’s main message was to keep attacking, move the ball a little quicker, and more goals would come in. He also put athletes in different positions to give more attacking options going forward. Going into the second half, the Leopards took the coach's message and ran with it scoring three goals. Leopard goalies Hailey Downing and Kamri McKnight collectively defended three shots on the goal by Denison. The second goal of the game was scored by Jessie Maashio with an assist from Reagan Matacale. The scoring effort continued later in the second half with a goal by Tatum Chester with an assist by Hannah Dunlap. The final goal was scored by Reagan Matacale with an assist by Jessie Maashio. In the second half, the Leopards had nine shots on the goal as well as 10 corner kicks. The varsity team is now 8-4-1 on their season.
