Lovejoy Flower and Gift Shop AKA Cupid’s Workshop
You’ve heard of Santa’s Workshop, but have you heard of Cupid’s Workshop? Stop by Lovejoy Flower and Gift Shop at this time of year and you’ll see preparations in full swing as the staff busily creates one-of-a-kind flower arrangements as they spread love around the Lovejoy community and beyond.
The owners of Lovejoy Flower and Gift Shop, Victor and Jayme Cantu, have lived in Allen since 1995. Three of their four children are Lovejoy High alumni (class of 2010, 2013 and 2017). Their youngest, Devon is a currently a sophomore at LHS. In 2015, they purchased a flower shop in Princeton, Princeton Flower and Gift Shop. Due to requests from their friends that they open a shop in the Lovejoy community, they opened Lovejoy Flower and Gift Shop in Dec. 2017.
Jayme describes the days leading up to Valentines and the day of, “We’re basically working 24-hours a day, we try to sleep between 4 and 6 a.m. We spend time prepping for the orders, cleaning the flowers and putting them in the cooler. We get all of the orders organized on a spreadsheet. We pre-ordered 10,000 roses for each shop. On Valentine’s Day we’ll do between 250 and 350 deliveries.” They also hire additional floral designers and delivery drivers during this and other busy seasons. Jayme said that Mother’s Day is busier than Valentine’s Day.
Throughout the year, they create floral masterpieces for birthdays, anniversaries, prom, homecoming, weddings, funerals, special events and much more.
In this industry, sentimentality often sweetens the aroma of the flowers. Jayme said, “One customer requested flowers specifically from Ecuador because her parents were celebrating their 60th anniversary and they were from Ecuador and are now living in the Lovejoy community. We ordered the flowers from Ecuador and then my husband delivered them because he speaks Spanish.” Another example from Jayme, “A customer said she always brings her mom a corsage on her birthday. This year her mom was turning 75, but the customer knew she wasn’t going to be able to deliver the corsage on that day. She asked if we could help. I quickly made the corsage and my son and I delivered it to the assisted living facility where she lived. She had just sat down for lunch with her friends. Devon spontaneously started singing Happy Birthday to her. She cried. The customer called us later and was very appreciative.”
They order flowers from three different suppliers, thus they can get flowers three times a day. House plants and market style hand bouquets are also available. They have access to tulips year round. They receive quite a few orders for Hawaiian leis for senior nights and graduation. They once received an order for black roses which they were able to fulfill by using floral paint. Jayme’s favorite flowers are white roses, “It’s what we used in our wedding.”
Jayme said that customers who visit Lovejoy Flower and Gift Shop for the first time are surprised by the wide selection of gift items available. They have a baby gift section, bath and body merchandise, Essential Oils, home decor and much more.
Jayme and Victor both had corporate jobs before opening Princeton Flower and Gift Shop. Jayme has three engineering degrees. During high school and college she worked in a flower shop.
She said that business so far has been amazing. Their one year goal is to continue to get their name into the community. Their five year goal is to possibly purchase land to build a greenhouse and possibly open another shop in a small community.
Flower arrangements start at $25. They offer a subscription service: Farm fresh, signature bouquets, hand crafted by their design experts. A three month subscription is $150, a six month subscription is $275 and a 12 month subscription is $550.
