Achieve Physical Therapy & Performance Helps Patients Achieve Goals
In the five short months since Achieve Physical Therapy & Performance opened in Allen, the “Wall of Achievement” is already an impressive architectural element of accomplishments. Patients are encouraged to leave words of inspiration upon completion of their treatment in order to motivate patients who are just beginning therapy. A few examples of these words of physical therapy success are: “Thanks for your dedication and for bringing healing to my life.” “Thanks for making me whole again.” “Thanks for getting me stepping again! It was fun too!” “Thanks for helping me relieve the pain (in) both (my) back and shoulder.”
Brian Hunter, DPT is the Clinic Director and Physical Therapist at the Allen location. (There are two other Achieve locations, one in Plano which opened in May 2007, and one in Garland which opened in June 2015.) Hunter explains why the Allen location was opened, “The owners of Achieve, Steve Cole and Steve Long, created such a successful physical therapy clinic in Plano and developed good relationships with doctors in the area resulting in so many referrals, that they couldn’t fit in all of the patients. They branched north (Allen) and south (North Garland) and plan to open another location in Garland.” Hunter worked at the Plano location from Feb. 2017 until the Allen location opened in Oct. 2018.
When patients come to Achieve for the first time, Hunter will meet with them to determine why they are experiencing pain, what their goals are and then determine a treatment plan that will allow them to achieve those goals. Each time the patient comes in for therapy, they will see where they are in terms of reaching the determined goals through objective progress notes which consists of measuring range, balance and strength. At Achieve, their goal is to return the patient to the previous level of activity prior to injury or disability.
The top reasons patients visit Achieve are to recover from an injury, improve range of motion or improve their quality of life. They also see athletes who are trying to improve their athletic abilities. Hunter said, “We are very personable at Achieve. When a patient comes in, it is our goal to make them feel better. We do that by building trust. A huge part of recovery is not just the physical side; it’s the mental and emotional as well. Some injuries could be due to a traumatic event. You need to trust yourself and your body to do things you can’t currently do. We offer a positive, motivational and encouraging environment. We cautiously watch our patients, correcting them if necessary and move them towards their goals.”
One of Hunter’s favorite success stories is when a collegiate soccer player came to see him after her second ACL reconstruction surgery. After nine months of treatment at Achieve, she was able to return to playing soccer and earned an athletic scholarship.
They have a gamut of equipment that allows them to customize treatment for each patient’s needs. Equipment includes treatment tables, recumbent bicycle, upper body ergometer (arm bike), elliptical, treadmill, traction machine, Total Gym, free weights, TRX and more.
Hunter earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and minored in Spanish at the University of New Mexico. He earned his doctorate in Physical Therapy from Wheeling Jesuit University in Dec. 2016.
