The Tutoring Center is Now Open in Allen

Dr. Apiwan Born, Center Director and owner of The Tutoring Center located in Allen, opened this franchise on Feb. 25, 2019. Dr. Born has taught college level classes in the field of IT Management for 18 years, but two years ago, when her youngest son entered middle school, she realized she wanted to go back to work full time. In 2017, her mother passed away. Dr. Born knew she wanted to be her own boss as well as honor her mom who was also a teacher, so she started looking into learning franchises. Dr. Born provided a personal experience to explain why they chose The Tutoring Center over other learning franchises. When her son was in the fifth grade, he had attention issues and part of his struggles was completing homework assignments. Dr. Born said, “We went to tutoring franchises, but we didn’t see the progress we expected to see. We saw short bursts of progress, but it didn’t last and he would go back to his previous struggles. When we took him to The Tutoring Center, he became better. The time he spent on homework improved, his attention was better in the classroom, his overall grades as well as STAAR grades improved. He loved the positive reinforcement he received at The Tutoring Center. He is our Tutoring Center success story. We liked the fact that there was not a long term contract to sign and we could go month-to-month. We stayed over a year.”

After meeting with Dr. Edward Thalheimer, founder of The Tutoring Center, Dr. Born realized they share the same vision, that of putting students first. She was also impressed with the fact that The Tutoring Center has a proven system which results in a 95% success rate. After purchasing the franchise, she and her husband, Ken Born, proceeded to learn The Tutoring Center system, build the franchise and hire staff. In Jan., they began seeing families for free diagnostic assessment and test consultations.  There are currently three staff members at The Tutoring Center in Allen, all of who are certified Tutoring Center instructors. All of the staff members have bachelor degrees and some have master’s degrees.

Dr. Born said there are two types of children who will benefit from enrolling at The Tutoring Center; children who are struggling in school, as well as those who are at the head of their class. She said, “We have two programs, one is the academic program which helps children catch up with their peers and the other is the enrichment program for children already ahead and who want to do better.” Children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade can enroll at The Tutoring Center. Families also come to The Tutoring Center when they want to prepare for an upcoming test.

When families come to The Tutoring Center for the first time, staff will focus on the child and find out the reason for the visit as well as family expectations. The diagnostic assessment is designed to uncover problems a child has with academic skills. This assessment provides a starting point as well as the reason the child is struggling such as a disability or lack of motivation. After the assessment, The Tutoring Center will create a personalized development plan for the child. The diagnostic testing is a free service. Dr. Born said, “We are not pushing them to enroll, this is always free.”

At The Tutoring Center, they incorporate a motivational behavioral management program. When children demonstrate good behavior, they are praised and given stickers. The stickers are accumulated and then turned into ‘grab money’ which they can use to purchase items from the in-house store. Dr. Born said, “This keeps the children focused and behaving in the way they are expected. We always use positive reinforcement.”

They maintain a clutter-free and welcoming environment which enables children to focus. Parents comment on how much they like the environment and the systematic approach to the diagnostic assessments. “School-based tutoring, whether free or paid, is often designed to help students complete their homework. But as we all know, completing homework is only one key to academic success. Our innovative system gives your child one-to-one instruction that far exceeds typical out-of-school assistance.” (Tutoringcenter.com)
