Leopards Sweep Into Round Three Of Playoffs
Lovejoy baseball is headed to the regional quarterfinals after sweeping both Frisco Reedy and Highland Park in the Bi-district and Area rounds of the playoffs.
The Leopards took on rival Highland Park at Globe Life Park on May 10th and 11th in the Area round of the playoffs. In game one Lovejoy earned the 8-2 win behind Jordan Yoder's complete game performance on the mound and multiple hit performances at the plate by Ralph Rucker, Luke Stine and Colton Laurence. Game two was a back and forth battle that tested the Leopards resiliency as the Scots took the lead late in the game. Lovejoy got on the board first when Michael DiFiore blasted a homer to right center for the 1-0 lead. Highland Park tied the score in the top of the fourth and Lovejoy answered in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs on singles by Finn and Rucker and a sac fly from Laurence to reclaim the lead 3-1. The momentum of the game changed in the bottom of the fifth when the Scots plated four runs to take a 5-3 lead over the Leopards. Again Lovejoy answered scoring eight in the bottom of the fifth to take a 11-5 lead. The offensive onslaught was highlighted by Jacob Terwilliger's single and RBI, Kolby Branch's double driving in two runs and singles by Yoder and Stine which lead to three more runs for the Leopards as they took the lead for good. Stine started on the mound for Lovejoy allowing four hits and three runs over four innings and Terwilliger earned the save recording the final three outs.
The Leopards improve to 25-9 on the season and advance to the regional quarterfinals against Frisco Lone Star. The three game series will be played at John Paul II High School on Thursday, May 16th 7:30, Friday May 17th 7:30 and Saturday May 18th 1:00 (if needed).
