Varsity Baseball Postseason Comes To An End

Varsity Baseball Postseason Comes To An End

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 16-18, the Varsity Baseball team fought against the Frisco Lone Star Rangers but fell short in the regional quarterfinals. “The expectations were very high for us going into the season, and we were expecting to go deep into the playoffs,”head coach Jason Wilson stated.“I am still disappointed, as well as all of the players are, that we are still not playing because we felt like we are a good enough team to have made it to Austin.”

Starting off the three game series, the Leopards first outing resulted in a win 3-1. During the first inning, the Rangers were the first to get on the board, but the Leopards were able to tie the game up 1-1 with a single by Luke Finn and a double by Michael DiFiore. The Leopards did not let down in the second inning with hits by Cameron Pool, Zach Smith, Jordan Yoder, and Luke Stine putting two runs on the board. Throughout the rest of the game, the Leopards were able to keep Rangers stranded on base. Leopard athletes outhit the Rangers 7-5. Leading the series 1-0, the Leopards were unable to secure a win on Friday night. After the Rangers scored runs in the first and fourth innings, Michael DiFiore, Jacob Terwilliger, Ralph Rucker, and Cameron Pool collectively helped the Leopards respond at the top of the sixth scoring three runs to tie the game 3-3. Although out-hitting the Rangers 10-9, the Leopards lost 3-4 in extra innings. Coming to compete on Saturday night, the Leopards’ playoff ride was cut short after another extra inning game resulting in a loss 7-8. “I was happy with how the guys kept believing and kept fighting in both games two and three,”Wilson stated.“It says a lot about how tough they are and how much grit and determination they play with.”

This year, the baseball program will be losing nine seniors: Michael DiFiore, Luke Finn, Colton Laurence, Cameron Pool, Zach Smith, Jacob Terwilliger, Cade Smitherman, Luke Stine, and Jordan Yoder. Seven of the seniors will be taking their talents to the collegiate level to play baseball. Michael DiFiore will be attending Oklahoma Christian University, Luke Finn will be attending Trinidad State Junior College, Cameron Pool will be attending Clarendon College, Cade Smitherman will be attending LeTourneau University, Luke Stine will be attending Weatherford College, Jacob Terwilliger will be attending Bucknell University, and Jordan Yoder will be attending Lafayette College. “[The seniors] have been determined and have brought their best efforts to practice and games,”Wilson stated.“They left everything they had on the field, and I am very proud of them.”
