Girls Basketball Camp Increases Love For The Game
Hosting two sessions filled with girls basketball athletes, the girls basketball program made sure their purpose was brought to action every second of summer camp this year. “The purpose of the camp is to teach young Lovejoy girls basketball players the fundamentals of the game while also increasing their love for the game,”head girls basketball coach Lance Boxell stated. “We want the girls to learn some drills they can use on their own to continue their basketball development.”
From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., 98 campers worked on ball handling, passing, shooting, footwork, and team play. Working in stations and in groups, the campers were able to work on their skills alongside current high school athletes that help continue to build the program. “I enjoy seeing the girls having fun playing basketball,”Boxell stated. “The best way to build a strong program is to have big numbers of players in the younger grades that are enthusiastic about the game.”
For the upcoming season, the basketball program will be returning nine seniors to play on the court. They are hopeful to make yet another outstanding appearance in the playoffs. “I am hopeful that the leadership of this group of girls will allow us to take the next step forward as a program and help us make a run in the playoffs,”Boxell stated. The team will start working on the first day of school through mid October to give coaches a chance to evaluate the players through a long tryout process before the season starts.
